Do It Yourself Carport Kits
Do it yourself Carport Kits are a great way of saving money. Even a small, simple carport can take 8 -12 hours to install and with ‘tradies’ charging $100 per hour, a couple of them on-site will make installation more expensive than buying a kit. State of the Art installation plans, complete with Q-Reader codes to take you to YouTube videos are available with all Professional Choice Carports. With these on hand, a couple of mates, a BBQ, and a few beers at the end of the job, you can have your new carport installed over a weekend.
A Do-It-Yourself Carport Kit will come with all parts pre-cut and drilled and most importantly, with all the important documentation you need to seek approval from your local council. With a Professional Choice Carport, you also know that your carport is of the highest quality and built to all Australian Standards.
What is a Carport Kit?
A carport kit is a disassembled carport. All the parts required to build a Carport will be supplied in the kit. You will also be supplied with full instructions/plans to make the installation process quick and easy. About the only thing you will have to supply is the labour and the concrete for the footings.
What Carport Kit Designs are available? Do It Yourself Carport Kits.
Professional Choice offer custom made kits in all styles. You can have a Skillion (flat) roof, A Gable roof, A Dutch Gable Roof, or a Hip Roof – the choice is yours. The kit will be made to your exact specifications; depth, length, clearance height and colour(s). If you have good existing concrete slab, you can even have the kit made with base plates to install on the existing slab.
How much knowledge or experience do I need before doing a project like this?
Hopefully, you have a few basic tools like an electric drill driver, measuring tapes and a Rivet Gun (these are cheap so hope you can use one?) Working with a handyman or builder friend will make the job even easier. You do need some experience with using tools, but most competent handymen should have few problems.
Is it cheaper to buy a carport kit?
You will find that buying a carport kit is less expensive than buying the materials to construct one. A kit will contain only the materials you need and there will be very little waste. Building your own custom carport will typically have an additional 30% of materials spare at the end! Your own custom job will also need approved engineering to all Australian Standards and that could be more costly than the materials you need to purchase.
Do I need Council Approval?
All Carport Kits will come with approved certification but only Professional Choice and very few others will have approved certification that will stand up to any checking or scrutiny.
You will have all certification and tailored site-specific engineering supplied to make your approval process quick and easy.
How Much will a Carport Kit cost me?
Carport kit cost depends on two main things – size/dimensions and location. Obviously, you will pay more for a larger carport but the wind region you live in will also dictate the price. The location dictates just how heavy and strong a carport must be. A carport that will stand up to cyclones in Far North Queensland is more expensive than one that is fit for purpose in Perth or Sydney.
A single carport kit (around 3m x 6m x 2.4m) would be between $1400 and $3500 delivered. A carport kit large enough for two cars (6m x 6m x 2.4m) would be between $3300 and $4200 delivered. This would be the least expensive Skillion (flat roof) style. A Gable Carport kit or a Hip Roof carport kit would be more expensive.
Is a carport kit high enough for a caravan?
Cheaper carport kits are unlikely to have any more than 2.4m clearance. However, a Professional Choice custom made carport can be made to fit any size vehicle.
How to build a carport attached to a house? Do It Yourself Carport Kits
We always recommend installing a free-standing carport if possible. The problem with an attached carport is that your Australian Standards certification cannot apply to this type of installation. No matter how strongly built your kit is, it will only be as strong or ‘safe’ as the connection made by the installer to the existing building. An engineer who has not been specifically hired to draw plans on-site can not guarantee this. The historical site plans and engineering plans of the building must be inspected. They must be approved while having new engineering plans drawn up for your carport project to be legal. This is a very expensive task if done properly.
