Our history
Welcome to Professional Choice® Sheds and Carports “About Us”. In 2017 our family business introduced the first residential solar carports to Australia. That introduction lead to the development of our e-commerce store Car Covers and Shelter as well as the website solarcarportsonline.
The Beginning!
Car Covers and Shelter has developed to become the widest supplier of car covers and shelters for all types of use in Australia. Starting off by offering Solar Carports, it developed to become one of the largest suppliers of indoor, outdoor, weatherproof, hail protection car covers and car bubbles in the country. To this was added a great range of Budget priced Carports, BlueScope Steel (Lysaght) Carports and Car Bubbles and Custom made car covers.
The interest in Solar carports was huge but the price of an installation was off-putting for most. We did not give up on our concept of solar carports and so worked with some of the best engineers in Australia to develop a reasonably-priced carport which was capable of taking the weight of solar panels after installation; The Professional Choice Range.
A surprising find – most sheds in Australia are not built to Australian Standards!
The engineering involved in developing a solar ready carport is similar to the engineering involved in producing sheds and other industrial buildings. Our huge surprise in development was to find that the current Australian Standards in Steel Buildings, including sheds, is not being met by most manufacturers in Australia. (Have a read here)
The majority use cheap imported steel which is not as strong as Australian made steel, but often ‘assume’ the same tolerances to our Australian product. Those that do use Australian Steel often cut corners by lowering the thickness and amounts of steel necessary to produce a complying Australian Standards Structure.
About us - Check the engineering!
To buy and install a steel building that is incorrectly certified is dangerous. Sheets of steel could (and in most cases will) fly off in severe wind conditions. Apart from the damage to stored goods this can cause, it could also be life-threatening. A Shed that is installed and found to be of poorer quality than the set Standards, could result in insurance claims being rejected, leaving the owners with no other choice than to sue the Certifier. If your certifier is working out of a home office with no proper indemnity, then a claim may have nowhere to go!

Not only do we offer Sheds, carports and industrial steel buildings that are up to Australian Standards, but we can also offer buildings built strong enough to take the extra mass of solar panels so all are now available in solar-ready also.

Sheds, garages and carports that are ‘solar ready’ is likely to be our future. With the advent of the electric car, (we’ll all be driving one soon), it just seemed sensible to spend the money on a carport or shed that would pay for itself and more, over time by installing solar panels on the roof.
We were surprised that no-one in Australia was offering a solar carport for residential/domestic use. Not even a carport strong enough to retro-fit solar panels!
We tried every solar company listed in Google, then we contacted manufacturers of solar frames. It is now quite common for companies to supply large commercial solar carports at places of work or even local shopping centres. No-one was prepared to design and sell to the Australian residential market.
The idea of importing solar carport kits from Japan or China was also investigated but was just too hard to import up to our high Australian standards.
Solar Carports - An Australian First
Then Solar Carports came along and we were delighted to find that their market research and thought process was identical to our own – and so Car Covers and Shelters and solarcarportsonline canan now offer Australia’s first Solar Carports.
We then developed our own range of Professional Choice Solar Ready carports and sheds. The first in Australia built strong enough to retro-fit solar panels on the roof.
If you want a shed or carport that is truly up to Australian standards then we can supply. Most do not seem to know that just because you have a certificate from an engineer that says a product is ‘fit for purpose’, it does not mean that it actually is!
